[introduction to false leaf tree]:
The hometown of pseudoleafy trees is on the Mediterranean coast, where the climate is hot and dry. The large and thin leaves are very harmful to its survival, so they gradually degenerate into scales and grow at the base of the "pseudoleaf"; instead of the leaves, the last branches of the branching system are used for photosynthesis. The branch is flattened and turns green, much like a normal leaf. We know that flowers of flowering plants can only grow on branches, and real leaves will not grow flowers. But the flowers of the false leaf trees grow on the leaves. So it's right to call this plant a false leaf tree, because its leaves are not real leaves. The leaflike body formed by flattening of branches. It is called leaflike branch in botany.
[plant morphology]:
Rhizome transverse, thick. The stem is much branched, with a longitudinal culm, dark green, 20-80 cm high. The leaflike branches are ovate, 1.5-3.5cm long and 1-2.5cm wide. The apex is gradually pointed to form a needle with a length of 1-2mm. The base is gradually narrowed to form a short stalk, which is often twisted, entire, with midvein and multiple lateral veins. Flowers white, 1-2 in the lower part of the midvein above the leafy branches; bracts dry membranous, ca. 2 mm long; perianth ca. 1.5-3 mm long. Berry red, ca. 1 cm in diam. The flowering period is from January to April, and the fruiting period is from September to November. It is native to southern Europe and occasionally cultivated in China as a bonsai.
[active ingredients]:
The main active components of pseudophylla are helisteranes and flavonoids. Helistane is the main active component in pseudophylla, including ruscosapogenin (also known as pseudophyllosigenin), neoruscosapogenin and several glycosides of ruscosapogenin.
